SALGUEIRO MAIA, “O CAPITÃO SEM MEDO”
O verdadeiro líder da revolução,
enquanto estratega operacional, pessoa
de grande reserva que se manteve sempre em segundo plano, faleceu há
21 anos, aos 47 anos de idade. São dele as palavras que se seguem,
na madrugada de 25 de Abril de ‘74:
“Ao princípio da madrugada, na
parada da Escola Prática de Cavalaria, afirmou perante 240 homens:
“Meus senhores, como todos sabem, há diversas modalidades de
estado: os Estados sociais, os corporativos e o estado a que
chegámos. Ora, nesta noite solene, vamos acabar com o estado a que
chegámos! De maneira que, quem quiser vir comigo, vamos para Lisboa
e acabamos com isto. Quem for voluntário, sai e forma. Quem não
quiser sair, fica aqui!” “

“Há vinte anos (há 24, hoje), quando era
primeiro-ministro, Cavaco Silva recusou-se a conceder àquele militar
uma pensão “por serviços excepcionais e relevantes”. A atitude
do então chefe do Governo provocou um sonoro coro de protestos,
tanto mais que foi conhecida aquando da concessão de uma idêntica
pensão a dois inspectores da extinta PIDE/DGS.”

CAPTAIN”
The effective strategic operational
leader of the revolution, a very private person who always kept
himself into the background, passed away 21 years ago, at age 47.
These are his words, early dawn April 25th, ‘74:
“Early that dawn, at the Practical
School of Cavalry's parade, he said before 240 men: “Gentlemen, as you
all know, there are several types of State: the social State, the
corporate State and the state we’ve come to. Well, in this solemn
night, we are finishing the state we’ve come to! Therefore, those
who’re willing to come with me, we’re heading to Lisboa to finish
the matter. All volunteering will leave and form a line outside.
Those who aren’t willing to leave, stay here!” “

“Twenty years ago (24, now*), Cavaco Silva,
prime minister then [and President nowadays**], refused to grant this military a pension “for
outstanding and relevant services” [when the Captain was already
seriously ill***]. This decision coming from the one who was then the
head of Government triggered a loud choir of protest, especially
since it came out at the exact same time a similar pension was granted to two agents of
the extinguished PIDE/DGS” (the former status quo State police).
